The Gothic look

The Goths were Germanic tribes from the north eastern part Europe, that invaded the Roman Empire led to her downfall. They were considered inferior and barbaric and compared to the Roman's organized and tidy Christianity, the Goths were pagan idolaters.

At the 14th century the era of renaissance began in Europe which involved cultural, artistic and philosophy Innovations. Compared to the new modern Renaissance art, the old middle age art was called "Gothic Art" represented something primitive and barbaric. There wasn't really a connection between gothic people and gothic art, but the nickname stayed until today.

Towards the end of the 18th century a new movement arose in Europe - "The Romantic movement". The romantic movement came as a contrast to the innovations of the renaissance and it's main idea was  to return to what we had once - innocence, mystical ideas, Individualism etc.  One of the hallmarks of the Romantic movement was a return to Gothic Art - passionate, and maybe a little primitive medieval art produces a . Gothic art Is expressed in the fields of architecture, sculpture painting and - fashion.

At the eighties, a gothic rock scene developed in England. It was some surt of evolution to the punk scene. The idea was a combination of heavy rock music with medieval elements. Later the gothic scene mingled with other elements taken from the heavy rock like crazy hairstyles, heavy makeup and piercings.

In our time, with the approach of "everything works", we can find all sorts of gothic look. As time passes we can expect that Goth will be more and more popular and because it represents one of our most basic needs: the nostalgic desire to live in the world of yesterday.

Goth is basically a very dramatic, romantic and impulsive look. The predominant color is black when sometimes there are touches of other colors - especially red. The fabrics are natural fibers with many elements of lace, silk, velvet and ruffles. There is a great victorian influence including corsets, lace, gloves and jewelry.

Goth's uniqueness is that the look is very sexy and feminine and  unlike modern elements such as heels or lycra fabric - this is a romantic fantasy of old times.
